CVAN WM Organisational & Steering Group Review 2025

By Colette Griffin

In early 2025, NAWM (now CVAN WM) commissioned a region-wide review to better understand the needs of artists, organisations and creative practitioners working in the visual arts across the West Midlands.

The findings will shape the direction of NAWM over the next three years, including the formation of a new Steering Group and a renewed focus on advocacy, opportunity, and inclusion.

This research was carried out by Earthen Lamp, and is based on input from over 120 individuals, including independent artists, arts workers, and organisations of all sizes and stages.

Key Insights from the Sector:

  • 67% of respondents earn income as independent artists or freelancers.
  • Over 40% have more than one source of income; 28% earn less than a quarter of their income from the visual arts.
  • 91% believe that artists must be represented on NAWM’s Steering Group; 71% want arts organisations included.
  • 39% of respondents identify as D/deaf, Disabled, Neurodivergent or with a long-term health condition.
  • Only 45% of respondents had previously engaged with NAWM, showing a strong opportunity for wider regional reach.

What the Sector Needs:

  • Advocacy and Investment: Artists and organisations want NAWM to lobby for funding, visibility, and stronger regional infrastructure.
  • Opportunities and Income: Calls for more paid work, commissions, and networking across the sector.
  • Support and Development: A need for mentoring, grant-writing help, and support for early-career and underrepresented practitioners.
  • A Hub for Information: Respondents asked for a central online space listing jobs, events, exhibitions, and resources.
  • Inclusive Leadership: A Steering Group that is diverse in background, geography, and experience — and includes voices from outside the arts sector.

Next Steps:

The report outlines clear, actionable recommendations to strengthen NAWM’s impact and responsiveness. From transparent governance to a more inclusive digital presence, NAWM is committed to putting these findings into practice.

“The West Midlands is a diverse region, and it’s not represented in the art that is receiving funding. It could be good to have a disability focus, or minority focus for new opportunities.”
— Survey respondent
“NAWM has the potential to bring us together and make things happen.”
— Artist and NPO worker
