The Art of Care programme, led by CVAN WM and DASH in partnership with the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, has been shaping an ambitious, care-centred vision for the new gallery at Midlands Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). The Art of Care explored themes explicitly connected with the hospital setting including chronic illness, care, and recovery.
The journey began with an introduction to the space and its potential. Artist-curator Gavin Wade highlighted the gallery’s flexible display structure, while Spectra’s Kate DeRight and Hayley Guest introduced the MMUH community garden and upcoming work that will engage the hospital’s diverse community.
The second session explored curating art in hospital environments. Sophie Leighton and Kate Watson from Bethlem Gallery shared insights on delivering meaningful projects with service users and across healthcare settings. West Midlands artist and researcher Roo Dhissou presented There is Strength in Softness, her 2024 commission for Sandwell CAMHS, emphasising the importance of community-driven practice.
The final session, facilitated by Ania Bas, explored curating inclusive, engaging programmes that balance artistic ambition with sensitivity to the hospital context. Ideas ranged from residencies and pop-up workshops to ethical funding models and long-term sustainability.
CVAN WM and DASH look forward to continuing our relationship with West Birmingham & Sandwell NHS Trust in developing ambitious, relevant and enduring programming for MMUH's unique gallery space.
